I’ve been a teacher all my working life and a potter during the latter years of my teaching career. I learned my craft working for many years alongside a professional potter. Recently, I have combined both being a potter and a teacher of pottery. I mostly work in stoneware clay because of its versatility and fire in an electric kiln because of its ease. My approach is very traditional, in that I make and mix my own glazes, however I occasionally experiment by combining commercial underglazes with my own to bring about a particular colour or effect which can’t always be achieved by using natural oxides alone.
I have my own studio “Woodside Pottery” in the garden, so my commute is very short! I enjoy teaching new skills to people who have never worked with clay before as well as helping to develop new ideas and techniques with those who have. Over the last few years I have provided pottery experiences for lots of new students and it never ceases to surprise me how creative everyone is. When I’m not teaching I make my own ‘pots’ and sculptures, which I sell directly from my studio, through my website www.woodsidepottery.co.uk and at exhibitions. I also do commissioned work which is always interesting and very rewarding. |
