Suzette Knight
I believe that eating and drinking from a hand crafted object evokes a feeling of comfort, honesty and originality. It brings a unique experience to the table. Experiences and feelings are something that you will remember, I want to make them good ones. I have always enjoyed creative pursuits for as long as I can remember. This passion has continued throughout my life. I was fortunate enough to study Ceramic Design at Central Saint Martins college of art and design, in London, where I gained a Bachelor of Arts Degree. I continued my studies on the MA Ceramic Design course in stoke-On-Trent. My design process starts with researching shapes and textures. I visit old buildings, and look at industrial structures and machinery for inspiration. I document points of interest photographically. From there, I sketch out ideas and start working in clay. I may go straight to my wheel, and the vessels start to evolve by themselves. Sometimes I make paper templates to workout a more accurate shape and to evaluate scale. Other times, I will make several prototypes and test pieces before settling on a final design. These processes are dependant on the making of either one off pieces or multiples. I am constantly looking at textures and the effects of decay on man made materials. These discarded artefacts have evolved to show a different kind of beauty. I express this in my work through marrying different surface textures together in various ways. The addition of bolts, rivets and sometimes steel tacks are a reflection of industrial construction. My more recent work has been a commission to produce a range of tableware for Ojo Rojo, a Mexican street food inspired restaurant in Bournemouth. I am currently working on a new tableware range for domestic and commercial use.
